Traveling to Cat Island, Bahamas

by Shane Pinder on October 30, 2008

Cat Island is located in the southern Bahamas and is approximately 48 miles long.  It is thought to have been named after the pirate Arthur Catt.  Mount Alvernia, the highest point in the Bahamas, is found in Cat Island and reaches the dizzying height of 206 feet!  It is also the birthplace of Sir Sidney Poitier.  Cat Island has many unspoilt beaches waiting to be explored.  For the more adventurous, Greenwood Beach Resort and Hawk’s Nest Resort & Marina offer scuba diving.

If you are interested in visiting Cat Island, you can take a flight from Nassau on any of the following airlines.

1.  Bahamasair

2.  Cat Island Air – telephone number – 377-3318

The following airlines also offer charter services from Nassau:

1.  Southern Air

2.  Pineapple Air

Flights are also available from Fort Lauderdale, Florida on:

1.  Lynx Air

2.  Contintental Airlines

Once you arrive in Cat Island, there are a number of places to stay such as:
