The Deveaux Plantation is found in the Settlement of Port Howe on the island of Cat Island. It was constructed in the 1700′s and was the residence of Colonel Andrew Deveaux. Colonel Devaux was a loyalist colonel of the South Carolina Militia and instrumental in capturing Fort Nassau in New Providence from the Spanish in 1783. Fort Nassau had been captured by the Spanish in 1782 with a force of 5,000 men. Fort Nassau was replaced by Lord Dunmore with a new fort which is known as Fort Charlotte and which still stands today.
Colonel Deveaux was rewarded for his efforts by being granted acreage in Cat Island on which he built his residence.
The residence is clearly visible from the public road which circles the entire island. You will find the residence just before you get to the entrance for the Greenwood Resort. The best time to get a shot of the front of the residence is during the late afternoon as the sun will be behind you. This shot was taken at 3:37 p.m.
